How we think about a room, and the beliefs that guide every home we style.
At Residence, we believe a room is felt before it is understood. Of the thousands of homes we have styled, the ones that stay with us are rarely the loudest. They are the considered ones. A considered room holds our whole philosophy in a single space, and this is how we build it.
We start with proportion. Before colour or detail, we read the bones of a room, the height of the ceiling, the run of the walls, the way light crosses the floor through the day. Every piece we bring in is chosen to sit in proportion to the space, so a room breathes rather than strains. When the proportions are right, everything else has somewhere to belong.
We design with light. A room reads differently at 9 in the morning than it does at 5 in the afternoon, and we style for the way it lives across the whole day. We watch how daylight lands, place the pieces that hold the space through it, and layer softer light for the evening so a room stays warm after dark.
We believe in detail. The weight of a linen, the grain of timber, the cool of stone, the give of a boucle. These are the things a hand notices before the mind does, and they are where a room earns its feeling. We choose them slowly, and we choose them well.
We work with restraint. The instinct to fill a space is a strong one, and we have learned to resist it. We take as much care with what we leave out as with what we bring in. Space around a piece lets it be seen, and a room with room to breathe feels calm. Calm is what we are always reaching for.
None of this announces itself. A considered room does not ask to be admired. It feels like somewhere you could stay, and that quiet certainty is what we put our name to.
